Can a Heat Pump Replace an Air Conditioner?

If you’re in the market for a new home cooling system, a heat pump is a great option. High-performance heat pumps provide energy efficient cooling and humidity control to keep your house comfortable all summer long.

But heat pumps do more than cool. They are dual-functioning systems that can also heat your home. So, not only can a heat pump replace your air conditioner, but it can also replace your heating system, giving you double the benefits.

The Difference Between a Heat Pump & an Air Conditioner

A heat pump and an air conditioner both work on the principle of transferring heat, but they’re not the same thing. The primary differences between them lie in their functionality and energy efficiency.

Functionality

An air conditioner removes heat from the indoor air and transfers it outside. It uses a refrigerant that absorbs heat from the indoor air at the evaporator coil and releases it outside at the condenser coil. A heat pump, on the other hand, can both heat and cool your home. In cooling mode, it works similarly to an air conditioner. In heating mode, it reverses the refrigerant flow to transfer heat from the outside air (even in cold temperatures) to the inside.

Energy Efficiency

Heat pumps take advantage of latent heat, which already exists, instead of creating heat. This reduces the need for energy input and increases energy efficiency.

Types of Heat Pumps

There are two types of air-source heat pumps: ducted and ductless mini split heat pumps. Ducted heat pumps connect to your central ductwork. Ductless heat pumps operate without ductwork, which allows you to install them almost anywhere in your home. You can install a ductless system with multiple heads for whole-home cooling or to add cooling to specific rooms in your home.

Why Replace Your Air Conditioner with a Heat Pump?

Replacing your AC with a heat pump has many benefits, especially if you’re currently using portable or window ACs.

  • Dual Functionality – The number one benefit of a heat pump is its ability to both heat and cool your home. With a heat pump, you get a new AC and heating system for the price of one.
  • Energy Efficiency – Heat pumps are more efficient than windows air conditioners and switching could help you save money on your summer AC bills. They also provide energy efficient heating in winter.
  • Safety & Security Window ACs can be easily pulled out from the outside, putting you at risk of break-ins. Heat pumps are installed inside your home so you can keep your windows locked up.
  • Convenience – You don’t have to remove and store your heat pump in the winter like you do with a window AC because it stays up (and works) year round.
  • Incentives – Heat pumps qualify for state rebates and federal tax incentives that make them more affordable. You can receive up to $10,000 or $16,000 in heat pump rebates from the Sponsors of Mass Save®, depending on your household income, and 0% financing. Heat pumps are also eligible for a $2,000 federal tax credit. Schedule a no-cost Home Energy Assessment with Neeeco to learn more about your incentive options.

FAQs About Replacing Your AC with a Heat Pump

Can I use a heat pump for AC only?

You can choose to keep your furnace or boiler in place and use your heat pump primarily for cooling. But you should consider using your heat pump for heating, too, because it is a more energy efficient option than your primary fossil fuel heating system.

Can a heat pump cool as well as an air conditioner?

Yes. Heat pumps use the same technology as air conditioners and can cool just as well, if not more effectively, depending on the type and rating.
