Energy-Saving Tip: Turn Down Your Hot Water To Save!

Did you know that your water heater accounts for 18% of your energy bill?

We use hot water in every aspect of our home, so it is no wonder that it comes out to a large expense. However, this doesn’t mean that you cannot do anything about reducing this bill on a monthly basis.

To help you save money and make your home more energy-efficient, here are a few great tips to help you save energy on your water heater.

1. Bring Down the Thermostat

Most water heaters come with a pre-adjusted setting of 140°F. Although this is a very comfortable temperature for showers, a lower temperature could be just as comfortable and may even help keep your skin healthier.

By lowering the thermostat by just 20 degrees, you will significantly reduce your monthly bill when the daily showers pile up. Additionally, a lower temperature will also extend the life of your water heater by reducing corrosion and mineral buildup.

2. Consider Insulating Your Storage Tank

This may seem obvious, but correct insulation traps heat. By extending this property of insulants, you can cover your storage tank with this material to stop your heater from frequently turning on to increase its temperature.

However, don’t turn this into a DIY project! Always hire a professional to make sure the insulation is installed safely and is not obstructing your heater from working properly.

3. Check and Repair Leaky Faucets

A leaky faucet may seem like something that you can put off fixing until you have the time for it, but every drop that comes out of the faucet mounts up to a lot of water wasted. In fact, numerous leaky faucets can waste 90 gallons of water every day!

Repair all leaky faucets as soon as possible to stop them from piling up on your bills.

4. Drain the Water Tank Every Year

Regardless of how clean a city’s water may be, sediment can quickly pile up in a water tank. This results in poor heat transfer and lower energy efficiency, meaning that more energy will be needed to heat the water to the set temperature.

If you are not sure how to do this on your own, always seek the help of a professional to make sure the process is completed safely and accurately.

5. Replace Old Appliances

Washing machines and dishwashers are used on a daily basis. As time passes, these appliances become less efficient and need more energy in order to work properly. If your appliances have reached the point of being 10 years old, it is definitely time to replace them.

For some people, this may seem like an unnecessary expense, but their price will pay itself back through lower bills quicker than you think. And you can save even more with our partnership with Mass Save® who offers incentives to upgrade old appliances to more energy efficient replacements.
