Evaluating Existing Duct Insulation

Duct systems having an effective R-value of 3 or greater are not qualified to be insulated. When calculating the effective R-value of current duct insulation to be upgraded to R8, keep the following points in mind.

  • Effective R-value of 2 or less irrespective of install quality is eligible.
  • Duct insulation with compression of insulation to less than 1 inch is eligible
  • Ducts that have badly installed insulation that is falling off or not correctly fastened with numerous exposed ducts.
  • Existing Duct insulation will be conceded during duct sealing to the point that it will not be able to be re-installed because of its poor weakened condition.

NOTE: Duct insulation is only suggested when Duct Sealing is included in the work scope.
